With the last few weeks of really awful weather it has made it even more apparent how the living room is the hero room of our home. I really love it in there. The sofa’s have proved to be such an excellent choice as they are the most comfortable things ever. I love that we can all pile on them on a miserable day and watch films. Which we have been doing a lot of recently! It has felt like only yesterday that we started to transform the room. Just to jog your memory this is what the room look like when we moved in back in July.
I actually have loved how it was such a blank canvas. Both myself and Si knew we would add a faux fireplace immediately to give the room a focal point. This was actually a fairly inexpensive thing to do, we just found a local carpenter and he did it all for us over a few days. I love the idea of simply having a hole for decorative items. I might fill it with something different when I get bored of the faux Ramskull but for now I absolutely love it.
The carpet in our house is lovely but it isn’t something we would have chosen. I personally find it difficult to look after with two boys and a dog. When we bought the house is was already completely built and had been for a while (hence us being able to just amend/decorate immediately) but what that did mean is we didn’t get to chose anything that was in the house. Alongside the idea of the fireplace, changing the flooring was always our intention.
If you haven’t heard of Karndean Designflooring they are a luxury vinyl flooring company with a head office in the Cotswolds, Worcestershire but have retail partners all across the UK. Our nearest Karndean Inspire Studio is Creative Flooring who are an Inspire Karndean Flagship store, which means they have an interactive design service in store. I loved the experience of going into store. It felt so relaxed and to be able to touch the samples made it so much easier to choose.
We have used Karndean before when we renovated our upstairs bathroom. The reason I love it is because it is a stylish and practical solution to flooring. It feels warm to stand on compared to hardwood flooring and there are so many different styles and ways to lay the flooring that you can create something you really love.
The fitting process for us was done over two days which I was really amazed by! Starting with removing the original flooring and then applying a screed to create the correct base for the floor planks to be laid. The next day was laying the flooring. We already had an idea in mind of what style of flooring we would like and we choose a herringbone laying pattern with a decorative edge of one tile. The plank we chose is called Pale Limed Oak in a small plank from Karndean’s stylish Knight Tile collection which worked really well against our furniture and the flooring the hallway. I had toyed with the idea of having a grey floor but I felt this complemented the space better. It is worth knowing that Pale Limed Oak also comes in a matching full length plank available in the same design should you wish to match room to room.
I feel that the new flooring will mean we can relax a little bit more in here now. Muddy dog paws aren’t going to send me into a panic as Karndean flooring is really easy to clean. It just feels so much more practical and so much more ‘me’ in here now.
What do you think?
I love how it has transformed the room! I would like to buy a rug to go under the coffee table and then this room is almost complete!

Hi, can you mop Karndean or will it lift like laminate? It looks beautiful x
Author
Yes you can mop it! I use one of those spray nips and it’s absolutely fine x
It looks so lovely, the wood and herringbone pattern is great. Do you know what this would have cost to install?
Author
It’s completely dependant on room size so it would be better to get in touch with your local Karndean retailer for a quote x
Look sfab do you mind me asking which kardean colour you chose for your flooring I’m currently trying to pick one but it’s so hard to choose.
I love your home! Could you tell me some more information on the name and colour of the sofa please? I saw it was tagged as dfs xx
Looks fabulous. Quick question on your sofa’s. Are they Joules Patterdale from DFS? And if so are they comfy, are you happy with them. Thinking of getting the navy one for our kitchen/snug.
