Plants For Happiness

I cringe at the things that bring me the most happiness recently. I also feel like I am cheating myself out of true happiness sometimes too. I am talking about those days when I consider a bubble bath ‘a treat’ or ‘me time’. Really Cara? Washing is a treat now is it? Has it really come to that? Well in short yes. Bubble baths and garden centres.

I go to garden centres ALOT. I know nothing of these green spikey chaps that I constantly purchase. However they bring me so much joy! (I can see my younger self rolling her eyes). But let me tell you something, I haven’t killed any plants this year. That, right there, is an achievement. Honestly it is easier to keep two children alive than one cactus that ‘apparently’ doesn’t even need to be watered.

These new loves have only really come about since turning 30. It was like saying goodbye to my twenties enabled me to breathe out and let a little inner granny shine through, guilt free. Each day I get a little more happiness from plants. Having nature around me is so calming. Im in a constant state of fucking zen. (Well 50% of the time anyway)

So say Hi to my four best friends. I have two Arcea Palm plants, one Aloe Vera and one of those ‘I don’t know who he is but he has lived for 5 years’ plants. As you can imagine the majority live in baskets. Which you can thank Pinterest entirely for. I know what your thinking, well perhaps I don’t but if you are thinking ‘how can a plant make anyone happy?’ let me enlighten you.

Some plants are meant to release positive energy. For example the Aloe Vera plant brings good luck and can actually fight off bad energy and vibes! Fighting plants? Ill take ten please. Im not making this stuff up. Google it, there are plants for all of your deep dark psychological issues. And that, my friends is why Im stocking up. These guys have been welcomed into my home. They have promised to put up with my shit and actually release some positive vibes (Oxygen).

Other than all that crazy talk. The green massively compliments my love of pale grey walls and the beams. This years goal is to get a plant in every room. I know I’m dreaming big right!?

Is anyone else obsessing over plants?

Cara

I used to have loads of houseplants until I got a dog and then I got all terrified of him eating something toxic and dying! Not sure why because he’s completely mullered a rhododendron, half a dozen evergreen shrubs and a tin bath of geraniums without coming to anything other than a runny bottom so I’m sure he’ll be fine. Any advice? Have you chosen anything with Wilf in mind? Hx

Have just “discovered” you Cara on Instagram and am loving your content.
That last plant looks a bit like a peace lily to me – which I just found out are toxic for dogs but my dog seems to be OK with our Peace Lily.
I love Arcea palms too (though I do tend to kill them after a while) – NASA rated them one of the best air purifying plants 🙂

Ah hello! Are peace lollies toxic to eat or just to have? The dogs don’t go in the lounge but I wouldn’t want them getting poorly!

Hi Cara, I think only if eaten. My dog co-habits quite happily with one we have in a pot on the floor – mind you he doesn’t tend to chew anything, so he’s low risk!

Where do you get your baskets from please? I have kept my peace lily alive for 6 months now so it deserves a little treat!
